Activity Goal
Employing a case-based live patient and digital format, this activity aims to disseminate best practices in the individualized assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with chronic pain.
Intended Audience
This educational activity is intended for a multidisciplinary audience of clinicians, including pain specialists, primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare providers interested in chronic pain management.
There are no prerequisites for this educational activity.
Overview
More than 50 million people in the United States suffer from chronic pain syndromes, and nearly half of the population will seek treatment for persistent pain at some point in their lifetimes. In fact, numerous epidemiologic studies have estimated an annual cost of $80 billion in the United States alone. This reflects the serious consequences of chronic pain on multiple functional and quality of life domains—affective, cognitive, physical, and occupational. Yet chronic pain is woefully underdiagnosed and undertreated. Once regarded as a symptom of underlying disorders, the neuroplastic changes that characterize chronic pain are now believed to constitute a heterogeneous disease state, requiring targeted assessment and management. All healthcare providers should therefore be prepared to differentially diagnose chronic pain syndromes, including low back pain, osteoarthritis, and neuropathic disorders, among others. Assessment must reflect the multidimensional nature of chronic pain and treatment should target underlying disease mechanisms as much as possible. This online multimedia continuing education activity highlights practical assessment and treatment strategies for different chronic pain syndromes, including a live patient demonstration of approaches to facilitate a thorough yet concise evaluation of low back pain, reflecting time constraints often faced by primary care clinicians.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this initiative, participants should be better prepared to:
1. Explain salient pathophysiologic events underlying chronic pain and their practical considerations for treatment
2. Conduct initial and ongoing multidimensional assessment of patients with chronic pain
3. Evaluate evidence-based approaches supporting diagnostic and treatment modalities for chronic pain syndromes
4. Individualize multidrug strategies based on differential diagnosis, inferred pathophysiology, patient prior medical history, comorbidities, level of function, and treatment goals
5. Formulate multimodal treatment strategies tailored to the complex pain symptomatology of patients, their psychosocial determinants, and affected functional domains
