Prescription Opioid Documentation and Surveillance (PODS) System

Scott M. Fishman, MD

Abstract: Responsible opioid prescribing requires significant training and systems that collect and process information and documentation, thereby allowing physicians to treat pain adequately and simultaneously address the growing problem of prescription opioid abuse. Indeed, prescribing opioids for chronic pain requires documented informed consent, and records of comprehensive pain assessment, misuse and abuse risk evaluation, therapeutic decision-making, functional outcomes that support the analgesic plan, and an adequate risk management plan. The PODS system is a computer-assisted algorithm to assess patients for opioid therapy by identifying patients at risk for addiction or abuse, educating patients about the risks and benefits of long-term opioid therapy, creating customized opioid treatment agreements, and facilitating medical documentation.
