Deep trunk muscles often contribute to low back pain (LBP), the most common type of pain reported by adults in the United States. Lumbar stabilization—an exercise program that improves strength, endurance, and motor control of these muscles—has been shown to improve pain scores and prevent LBP recurrence. Following assessment of patient symptoms and movement impairments, the program first focuses on supporting a neutral pelvic position, and then works towards improving muscle strength. In addition to physical factors, postural issues and psychosocial stressors may also contribute to chronic LBP. Therefore, stress management and ergonomic assessment of the patient’s work and home environment are important considerations for physical therapists treating LBP patients. Here Michael Cormican discusses back pain assessment and integration of lumbar stabilization programs together with important aspects of patient education for LBP management.
