Palliative care research is related to understanding and improving the quality of life of patients near the end of life. Here, Dr. Fine discusses barriers to research in palliative care, appropriate community-based protocol designs, and the role of institutional review boards in addressing ethical and methodological issues pursuant to research in populations with life-threatening conditions.
